MailCOPA Multi User Email Software - Use with AVG Anti-Virus

Top  Previous  Next

MailCOPA is designed to work with AVG V7 (link to AVG's Web Site) and upwards (including the free edition), if this software is installed.

NOTE that MailCOPA accesses the AVG API (Application Programmers' Interface), and does not depend on AVG's built-in email scanning module. If you do not disable AVG's built-in scanner, messages will be scanned twice which will slow the system down.

To enable scanning, check the appropriate box(es) on the Connect Preferences. If AVG V7 (or later) is not installed, these will be disabled.

NOTE that this does not apply to V6 or earlier of AVG which do not have an API (Application Programmers' Interface). The API allows MailCOPA to call AVG, request a virus check, and get back an answer that enables the deletion of any viruses.

If enabled, incoming mail messages will be scanned using AVG including the contents of zip files. This will be done before anything is written to your system, so that if a virus is present it has no opportunity to cause any damage.

The message will be handled entirely in memory, which brings the danger that should there be some major system problem, it could be lost. However, at this stage, the server has not yet been instructed to delete the original message. It will still be on the server for later retrieval.

If a message is found to be infected, there are two ways in which you can configure MailCOPA to handle it in Configuration menu-arrow Preferences menu-arrow Connections:

Automatically remove the virus from the message.
This has the advantage that MailCOPA will continue functioning without any need for attention, but will prevent you from collecting viruses (if you should be so minded!)

There are three ways of finding out if virus(es) have been downloaded and deleted:

1. Check in the header (press the 'H' key when viewing the message) and look for a header line:
X-MailCOPA-virus-removed:

2. Consult the Connect Log (View menu-arrow Connect Log)

3. Search Messages for the header line above.

Alert you so that you can decide what to do
A dialog box will be presented asking if you wish to remove the virus or not. This will halt mail collection, and may hold up any dialup connection. We strongly advise you not to use this option with unattended dialup connections !
